Introduction

“Little Universe” is a collaboration with A Moving Sound’s co-founders, Mia Hsieh and Scott Prairie with Chinese instrumentalist and percussionist Alex Wu from Taiwan, guitarist Pieter Thys from Belgium and percussionist Edwardo Campos from Brazil. The music of A Moving Sound borrows melodic and rhythmic inspiration from the musical traditions of Asia, Africa and the West to create compositions that are uniquely beautiful and rich in theatrical images. Respected Asian music authority and founder of London’s “Far Side Music,” Paul Fisher says: “True to the group’s name, the music is constantly surprising and moving ... cleverly avoiding New Age cliches with an experimental edge that leaves you feeling like you’ve been on a magical mystery tour. Compelling stuff!” A Moving Sound has quickly established itself in Taiwan and internationally as a truly innovative ensemble. Their art is guided by a personal, yet sophisticated creative vision that achieves the rarely accomplished task of bringing an East-West collaboration to the realm of unselfconscious joyful music.!

A Moving Sound

East Meets West, Artistic and Creative New World Music

A Moving Sound is an exciting multi-media performance company based in Taipei, Taiwan. It blends Taiwan native Mia Hsieh's training as a dancer and vocalist with New Yorker, Scott Prairie's experience as a music composer and improviser. The combination of their creative styles and cultural backgrounds creates a rich and unique performance quality that is earthy, avant-garde and very engaging for a wide range of audiences. They present work both in the form of highly creative multi-media music concerts as well as staging dance/ theatre productions.

A Moving Sound's performances have a unique combination of musical influences and ideas that break the borderlines of culture and stylistic classification. Their work features the rich textures of Chinese instruments such as the "erhu" (a stringed instrument played with a bow) and combines Eastern concepts such as Tai chi and Asian traditional dance and singing with modern and sometimes experimental Western music/ theater ideas.

The creators of A Moving Sound believe that the creative process is a profound experience of meeting oneself, of meeting another and of meeting the world in the mysterious universe that we live in. Creating art, spiritual practice and social service are considered primary commitments in life. A Moving Sound is very active in the Asian-Pacific region, performing concerts and festivals, offering workshops, working with communities and collaborating with artists from all over the world. The company is quite skilled in adapting their creativity to the environment and situation at hand, whether performing in a concert hall, commercial project or street performance. The company has toured in Asia and the United States and has a tour planned for Europe in the coming year.

This modern world is full of challenges yet at the same time so many possibilities exist for positive change. "A Moving Sound" hopes to be a resource and a catalyst for dynamic creative energy. They believe creativity is a light that helps us all to reach our full potential!
