Introduction

In 2003, the Ho-Hi-Yan Music Festival is entering it's fourth year. From the beginning the rock fest, held at Fu-long beach on Taiwan's North-East coast, has featured Taiwan's hottest, hungriest bands, including Tolaku, Backquarter, Sticky Rice, The Clippers, and MC Hotdog. The 2002 festival's battle of the bands attracted applications from every corner of Taiwan, of which ten were selected to sling their guitars across the golden sands. In addition, the festival has expanded from its rock 'n' roll roots to include other styles, such as reggae, jazz, and experimental electronic music. This compilation presents a cross-section of the Taiwanese bands that performed at the 2002 festival, a slice of summer sun.

Bands

Benji
"Studying so hard, is it just to get a job, I don't know..." Taiwanese rap over a storm of heavy metal, Benji delivers serious social criticism.

Viva La Tuna
Cutie pie pop in Japanese, this song is a walk of memories, the sweetnes of a childhood crush.

Won Fu
Music to bring about world peace, "Our lives are of one root, so let's dance!" On the surface happy--deep inside, even happier! Are you happy? Whatever you do don't look back--you might sprain your neck!

Tizzy Bac  *2002 Winner
Don't listen to one song and try to nail a band into a casket category forever, what you heard is not what's now, open your eyes and look into the kaleidescope!

Swing
The beats of DJ Ty, words by Mr. Red, and the soul vibrations of reggae master Patrick. In "Mountain Rain" a woman's heart is hidden in the clouds, waiting for the rain to fall.

Mirror
Mirror is a group of session players that have put together a jazz sound clear and light as glass. This song is the story of a mother's love for her baby.

78bpm
Down tempo electronica that sounds like what you'd get if you combined poetry, fire dance, and video art. A soft, sexy instrumental dream.

The Clones
One of the first bands in Taiwan's punk movement, the Clones say to Hell with war, and take all those son of a bitch generals too, but make sure you keep war out of your own heart!

KbN
Minimalist electronic music. The meaning of life can be found on the back of the road.
