Introduction
Pau-dull's songs have been sung in aboriginal communities around
the east cost of Taiwan for close to twenty years, but it wasn't
until 2000 that he burst into mainstream public consciousness,
when his first album Ocean won the Golden Melody Award. Soon
afterwards, he moved to Orchid Island, a small island southeast
of the main island of Taiwan. This island, with only a small
population of indigenous people of the Tao Tribe living simple
lives, is about as remote from the hustle and bustle of Taiwan's
big cities as it is possible to be. Here Pau-dull could play his
guitar with only the ocean waves and the cries of gulls as
accompaniment. When he was asked by several directors to write
soundtracks for their films, he obliged by writing and arranging
instrumental music pieces all on his own, just using his guitar,
pan flute and accordion, and recording it himself with simple
recording equipment in his home on Orchid Island. The results
are as simple and beautiful as the environment they were
recorded in. As accompaniment to film, Pau-dull’s music was a
perfect accompaniment, and it surely played a role in convincing
the judges at the 2005 Venice Film Festival to select Small
Station as Best Short Film and in Chronicle of the Sea,
Nan-Fang-Ao’s success at the 41st Golden Horse Awards. But the
music stands alone just as well, evoking the pure, natural
ambiance of Orchid Island as well as the contentment the sailor
feels as he returns home after a long time at sea. In it you can
hear the sound of the ocean and the cries of the sea gulls as it
takes you away from your busy life to a more peaceful place
across the sea.
